Matter (72U)

When my copy heart met art.

72U is a creative residency housed inside 72andSunny where 10 makers of all types of creative backgrounds are selected to explore and make in a highly collaborative environment This is our first project, an art installation called ‘‘Matter’’.

We explored our own ideas of identity, immigration, and integration with the world and with ourselves. Plexi passports were created to showcase all of the places a part of us and make them work with each other. We also included neon in the center with a very organic sculpture of all our birthplaces connected in a map.

This installation represents what we accomplished in our 1st week, but most importantly it speaks to our individual identities as well as capabilities within a team.

The themes of identity, immigration, and integration inspired the team to think about how they operate as global citizens. They decided to create their own passports showcasing all of the places that they consider to be part of themselves. In terms of material, they experimented with neon lights and plexiglass; utilizing laser cutting and etching. The installation represents what they accomplished in their first week at 72U, but most importantly it speaks to their diverse identities and capabilities as a collaborative team.
